One of the most common questions we hear when interacting with our clients involve where to place their tattoo artwork! There are many considerations to factor in when you’re trying to decide where you want to get your body art. In this article, we’ll explore a few potential tattoo locations.
Head, neck and face tattoos are becoming increasingly popular, especially the area of the nape of the neck.
Facial tattoo art is actually more commonplace than you may realise. Permanent makeup application actually involves tattooing your eyelids, lips or even cheeks to create a specific, permanent makeup effect. But these facial tattoos are not really considered tattoo art, nor are they obvious. In fact, the best permanent makeup tattoos are actually intended to be difficult to identify as such!
But tattoo art is also quite popular on the face, neck and head.
Our Melbourne tattoo artists have been seeing a fair number of facial tattoo requests in recent years, especially from women. Celebrities such as Kat Von D, a Mexican-American tattoo artist and star of her own television show, LA Ink, have helped to make this form of tattoo art more mainstream. Kat Von D. has a series of stars along the side of her forehead, right near her temple and this is characteristic of the style of facial tattoos that have become more popular and mainstream among women in recent years.
Facial tattoos are often on the more uncomfortable end of the spectrum when it comes to the actual tattooing process, as there’s often very little underlying muscle and fat, along with high nerve density. But most facial tattoos are fairly small, so it’s typically a very brief discomfort.
The main consideration with face tattoo art? The inability to conceal them. While tattoos are very mainstream now and well-accepted, some individuals still work in professions where it’s required to conceal tattoos. Facial tattoos can be difficult to conceal. Though a tattoo that’s located right near the hairline can be hidden with a creative hairstyle that pulls a section of hair over the tattooed region. If you have questions concerning a facial tattoo, our Melbourne tattoo artists are happy to answer questions or offer ideas for your body art project.
Scalp tattoos are most popular among men since you must shave your head in order to obtain the tattoo. Since men are more apt to have a shaved head, this tattoo location seems to be a bit more popular among males. The ideal thing about scalp tattoos is that you can conceal them very easily by growing in your hair, wearing a wig or by donning a hat. Though if you happen to work at a location that does not permit hats, and you don’t own a good wig, a scalp tattoo can be a bit problematic as it can take a couple months to grow enough hair to conceal you tattoo art!
Scalp tattoos tend to be on the more painful end of the spectrum since there is virtually no fat or muscle underlying the skin -- just bone. This causes a bit more discomfort than you would experience with other, more fleshy locations.
Another increasingly popular trend in tattoo art involves tattooing the area right behind the ear, especially on women. They are easy to conceal with hair, so they don’t typically cause any problems if you work in a profession that’s less than accepting of tattoo art. These are generally small tattoos, so this is a good choice if you’re seeking inexpensive, cheap tattoos. Melbourne natives and visitors should expect to pay a minimum of $120 for your tattoo project; this is Sin City’s minimum charge for tattooing.
Sin City’s Melbourne tattoo artists also do a fair number of neck tattoos. The side of the neck has also become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among women. But far and away, the nape of the neck is the most commonplace above-the-shoulders tattoo location.
One major disadvantage to this tattoo? You can’t see it yourself! Many clients spend a long time selecting their tattoo art. So when so much time and thought goes into the process, they want to see the tattoo on a regular basis!
If you’re having a difficult time deciding what to get or where to get a tattoo, our Melbourne tattoo artists can assist by providing recommendations or ideas.
